From an NLP perspective, there are many conditions that effect communication.  Taking them into consideration will improve your ability to communicate effectively.

The factors in the "medium" control the structure of messages and may be substantially different for the all of the people involved in any particular communication.

Pick any person, object or idea and answer the questions presented.  Ask yourself the questions in the following mind map, your answers will provide the information linked by the arrows.  Doing this causes you to expand your thinking about the person, object or idea.  This is an adaptation of what Robert Dilts refers to as "Logical Levels".
