Its the # 1 fear of
people planning to attend a seminar....
How To Avoid Making
a Mistake When You Select An NLP Training
10 Embarrassing
Selection Errors You Should Know About
Most people enjoy
selecting an NLP Training Seminar almost as much as they enjoy taking a
test. It puts their research and ability to make decisions, on the
line with their time and money. It’s not that they don’t need NLP
Training or want the ultimate advantage in personal and professional
interactions, most seminar delegates fear making a mistake when they make a
significant investment in themselves. They worry that the training may
be too advanced or too simple for them, that it won’t fit with their
lives and their dreams. It doesn’t have to be like this, we’ll
show you how to make sure you make good decisions when you select your NLP
Training.
A New You
People go through
five stages when they select an NLP Training Seminar. The first stage
is when you begin dreaming of having new knowledge and abilities. You
surf the Internet looking for information and insights. You may begin
paying attention to books, CDs, articles and television shows about human
behavior, NLP, hypnosis and the power of minds. You especially notice
when a friend, associate or relative gets their NLP Certification.
Finding Choices
This is usually the
fun part. Taking time to browse various NLP institute web sites, to
examine what they offer. “I’m just looking” aptly describes this
stage. When you visit an NLP institute web site, the last thing you
want is a pitch demanding your full address and phone number before you get
any details about their training seminar. Providing your name
and e-mail should be enough to get you the information. You certainly don't
want to wait for a snail-mail brochure or a telemarketing call! If you
are pressured into registering for a seminar during this stage, you may
regret your decision later. At The Performance Institute of NLP, we
recognize how important this stage is to making a wise decision that lasts
through the years. We recognize your need for time to consider your
options.
Selecting &
Planning
As people begin
actually selecting and planning, they may recognize, for the first time,
they are actually selecting someone to train and Certify them as a Licensed
Practitioner or Master Practitioner of NLP. They begin to think about
trainers reputations, sizes and dates of seminars and how gaining NLP
knowledge and ability will fit into their lives. These stages are
crucial for your long term satisfaction with any seminar you attend.
When seminar delegates make a mistake, it is most likely going to occur
during the selection and planning stages. It is important to remember
that you are not merely going to attend an NLP Training, you are obtaining
creative new ways of enhancing your life!
Avoiding
Embarrassing Mistakes
Many people never
get to the final stage, which is enjoying the results of their NLP Training.
As soon as the seminar is done, they realize there is a problem. It is
one of 10 problems that can occur whether you attend a single day seminar or
even a full 8 day event. Seminars and training are a way to gain many
skills, abilities, and attitudes that are all well worth learning.
Since training is a significant investment of time and money, it's important
for people to know how to identify excellent training as soon as possible,
and to spot mediocre training in advance.
A Combination of
Errors
Some "trainings"
just present ideas, rather than actually train you in new skills and
abilities. The knowledge becomes intellectualized rather than
realized. A book can present ideas, in much less time and for much
less money. Other seminars provide participants with confidence and
motivation, but not the behavioral competence to support it. Some
seminars are fun, but delegates don't leave with new skills they can use.
They can be worthwhile experiences, as long as they aren't confused with NLP
Training.
Insufficient
Attention To Results
Evidence of
Results: (# 1.) The resume of trainers experience, reviews from previous
delegates and media recordings, all provide insight and answers to questions
about their trainings. When people fail to focus on what previous
delegates are able to do after the training, they could end up
attending seminars where the trainers act like experts, or make delegates
feel good in the seminar, but don't teach skills or abilities that can be
applied immediately and automatically.
Paying For One
And Getting... More?
Trainers: (# 2.)
Some trainings are advertised without any names, or with the name of a
well-known trainer. It may turn out that the "big name" will only teach a
small portion of the training, and less-skilled trainers or apprentices will
teach the rest. Find out about all the trainers and how much of
the seminar they will actually conduct. Having flashy and
charismatic trainers is not a substitute for effective training.
Misplaced Trust
Recommendations,
Degrees and Certificates: (# 3.) The meaning of a certification or degree
varies as widely as the places that grant them. A degree may be a good
measure of academic record, but usually has little to do with training
ability. People should trust their own impressions of a trainer first,
and recommendations from people they know who have experienced the trainer,
next. Be cautious about one line brochure quotes, even from famous
people. Occasionally "big names" give endorsements based on payment,
rather than the trainer's skill.
Not Getting
Beyond Words
Demonstration
versus Information: (# 4.) Live demonstrations of the methods being taught
are far more effective than reading from the seminar manual. Research
repeatedly demonstrates that over 80% of the impact of communication is
nonverbal. This means delegates get a much more complete understanding
of any method that's demonstrated. The trainer can ask for a volunteer
from the audience, bring in a "naive client" or invite the entire group to
participate in an experience that provides a demonstration.
Information without demonstration is less than 20% of the information
delegates need.
Didn't Get To Do
It
Exercises: (# 5.)
Pathways to making the new skills a part of behavior. It's usually
easiest to learn skills when the trainer sets up a series of
carefully-designed exercises to practice new skills comfortably and safely.
A good training starts with smaller component skills and then begins easily
putting these skills together for maximum impact in real situations.
Understanding is insufficient to get results in life, it's what a person can
do with it that counts.
Sizzle Without
The Steak
Presuppositions: (#
6.) Beliefs or attitudes that are presupposed in the trainer's behavior.
Is the trainer rigid on the importance of flexibility? Is the trainer
focused on razzle-dazzling the delegates, rather than teaching the delegates
how to razzle-dazzle themselves and others? Does the trainer treat
delegates as a equals who can learn the trainers skills, or does the trainer
act like some kind of "guru" who's skills the delegates could never hope to
achieve? A good trainer gives delegates the steak, not just the
sizzle.
Answers Have To
Have Questions
Questions: (# 7.) A
good trainer will invite and respond to questions, rephrasing or
demonstrating the material. in greater depth if required. Excuses such
as "Your unconscious is getting it", weak doubletalk answers, blaming the
delegate, saying "I'll get to it later" and then not getting to it,
simply don't cut the mustard. Make sure training reviews reported that
the trainer encourages questions and responds respectfully. It can be
the difference that makes the difference.
When You've Got
To Go, You've Got To Go
Response-ability:
(# 8.) Nonverbal communication is very important. A good trainer will
notice nonverbal cues from the audience or demonstration subject and
vary their behavior in response. The trainer notices what the needs of the
group are and has the ability to vary the training plan in response.
Training with a trainer that is unaware of when the audience is getting
restless and needs a break, just pisses people off.
Not Knowing What
You Know
Quality Control: (#
9.) A good trainer uses ways to verify that participants are actually
learning the skills being taught. Capable assistants to provide
feedback to delegates and the trainer, observation of delegates behavior by
the trainer, exercises that utilize previously learned skills, feedback from
the delegates, reviews of the skills learned and follow up after the
training, can all serve this function. No quality control results in a
training that's not in control of what delegates are supposed to be
learning.
Bored Dumb
Humor: (# 10.) When
delegates are laughing they are really learning. The best aid
to learning is good humor, when it's not at anyone's expense. Laughing
with others or at the human condition, infuses people with endorphins.
They feel fantastic and learn fast in that state. A trainer who can
get the delegates laughing, can make hours of learning fly by in no time at
all. Learning is supposed to be fun. Without laughter, a seminar
becomes a boredom that drags on and on.
No Rush Equals No
Mistakes
We believe when
seminar delegates have the opportunity to read detailed information about
upcoming seminars and find out what previous delegates have experienced,
they make the choices they will enjoy.
A word of caution -
the 10 problems listed above can not be solved by pre-packaged or cookie
cutter solutions. An NLP Training Seminar should be as unique as a
fingerprint, each one looks the same until the details are examined. Each
seminar has a unique combination of delegates and a good NLP Trainer
responds uniquely to the needs of each group. This lets your
unique potential shine through your NLP Training experience. It
enables you to organize information and perceptions in ways that allow you
to achieve results that were once inconceivable to you. It's an
awakening of your mind and all your senses, which can instantly be applied
to automatically achieving your goals.
